This is a letter by 22 year old Hunter Thompson when asked for advice by a friend. I love the way Hunter disclaims any position of competent advisor in matter of life and it's purpose. For no man could ever ever fill that role to any agreeable standard.

The crux of the advice lays out something like this : Do not pursue a goal, but a way of life.
It is pointless to conform a life to its goal. We would be much better off by conforming our goals such that we can have the way of life of our choosing.
This is a comforting prospect in light of fact that a goal can ask of us unethical, egoistic or malevolent measures to achieve it. On other a way of life would lead us where our natured self is supposed to be at. By essence what a goal is supposed to do for us.

My Takeaway

If I were to follow advice of Mr. Hunter, I would envisage a way of life as such -

  • working on meaningful products - making and developing them
  • Doing physically exhaustive activity for sake of itself
  • convey my thoughts and ideas poetically and have people engage with it.
  • Read, Listen from people of contrast background and about colorful subjects.
